These cells are known also as astroglial cells or astroglia, and they are grouped together with oligodendrocytes as macroglial cells. Astrocytes are star-shaped types of glial cells that constitute the largest and most numerous neuroglial cells in nervous tissues (over 50 % of the total cell number in the cerebral cortex) (Peters et al, 1991). The glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is considered to be a true marker for these cells (Eng et al, 1979).
