[gemistocyte]
[from Greek gemistos, laden, full, to fill up] This cell type is seen commonly in brain tumors arising from astrocytes (astrocytomas), oligodendrocytes (oligodendrogliomas), and ependymal cells (ependymomas). The cells are round to oval with an eccentric nucleus and abundant cytoplasm containing glial filaments. Under conditions of cerebral injury, edema, infarctation these cells may represent swollen, reactive astrocytes (gemistocytic astrocytes) (Chuaqui and Tapia, 1993; Gilchrist et al, 1996; Jain et al, 2006; Popescu et al, 2013; Simpson et al, 1987; Sugita et al, 2001).
