These cells, called also oligodendroglial cells (for a discussion of their development see also: Yamada et al, 1996; Miller, 2002. See also: O-2A cells). Together with astrocytes they are grouped together as macroglial cells.
Oligodendrocytes are a type of glial cells that support central nervous system neuronal axons by providing an insulating myelin sheath. For oligodendrocyte precursors see: synantocytes, NG2 cells; for a cell type associated with malignant oligodendrocytes see also: gemistocytes.
