Neuroglial cells are supporting nerve tissue cells (see also: glial cells) (for overview see: Kettenmann H and Verkhratsky, 2011; Morest and Silver, 2003). They are differentiated from connective tissue cells. There are four types of central nervous system neuroglia: astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, microglial cells, ependymal cells. There are two types of peripheral nervous system neuroglia: Schwann cells (Neurolemmocytes), satellite cells. Note that frequently microglial cells are excluded as these are considered to be resident macrophages.
