The cDNA encoding this protein has been cloned by Arakawa et al (1990) from libraries of human peripheral leukocytes of apparently normal subjects. The encoded protein, which shows Ca(2+)-independent homotypic and heterotypic cell adhesion activities (Oikawa et al, 1991), is a member of a protein family related to carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and is the same as CGM6 [CEA gene family member 6].
In the nomenclature of CD antigens this protein has been given the designation CD66b. For nomenclature regarding this and related proteins, including their structures, see also Beauchemin et al (1999).
