a term pertaining to the binding of two structures to each other. Heterotypic (or heterophilic) interactions are those involving binding between dissimilar structures. For proteins, this would mean binding of one kind of protein to another protein of a different kind, i.e., the formation of heterodimeric molecules. For cells this would mean binding of one cell type to another cell of a different kind.
Many protein domains are known to bind to other, dissimilar protein domains. With respect to this particular protein domain, this would be a heterotypic interaction.
Two cells of the same kind can bind to each other (homotypic
