[Rod-derived cone viability factor 2] This protein has been identified by Chalmel et al (2007). The approved gene symbol is NXNL2 [nucleoredoxin-like 2]. It is known also as C9orf121 [chromosome 9 open reading frame 121].
The protein is related to thioredoxin and exists in two splice variants. RdCVF2 shares many similarities with RdCVF. The RdCVF2 short isoform is a trophic factor for photoreceptor cells (rod cells). The longer isoform (RdCVF2L) may have thiol-oxydoreductase activity. Unlike RdCVF, RdCVF2 long isoform mRNA is expressed also in other tissues such as tumor, testis, stem cells
