[Rod-derived cone viability factor] The approved gene symbol is NXNL1 [Nucleoredoxin-like protein 1]. The protein is being referred to also as TXNL6 [thioredoxin-like 6].
This protein, which shows 33% similarity to thioredoxin, has been identified by Léveillard et al (2004) who reported specific expression in photoreceptor cells (rod cells). The protein is expressed in two different splice variants.
Role as moonlighting protein
The extracellular form is thought to be involved in cone viability as a trophic factor, the other form (full-length isoform; abbr. RdCVFL
