Photoreceptor cells are specialized cells that detect and transduce light. According to the light reception mechanisms involved two types are distinguished. Ciliary photoreceptor cells use opsins that activate a phosphodiesterase cascade. Rhabdomeric photoreceptor cells have microvilli and use opsins that activate a phospholipase C cascade (Arendt, 2003; Shichida Y and Matsuyama, 2009). The classical photoreceptor system depends on cone cells and rod cells, which possess distinct subsets of proteins involved in phototransduction (Nathans, 1999; Molday, 1998). These cells, which are responsible for detection and transduction of light energy are found in the outer nuclear layer of the retina.
