Generally speaking, any agent that stimulates differentiation and survival of cells. They may be specific for a restricted number of cell types, for example neurotrophic factors (see also: neurotrophins), or affect many different types of cells. The absence of these factors usually causes cell death. The term trophin may be used synonymously
