This peptide, Arg-Val-Phe, identified originally in wheat germ, has been shown to possess antioxidant properties. It is neuroprotective for human neuroblastoma cells (SH-SY5Y) and increases cell viability and reduces the release of lactate dehydrogenase when these cells are exposed to hydrogen peroxide. Pretreatment with RVF also inhibits H2O2-induced accumulation of reactive oxygen species and maintains the mitochondrial transmembrane potential as well as preventing intracellular Ca(2+) dysregulation during hydrogen peroxide exposure. Pretreatment with RVF prevents cell death by apoptosis by increasing the BCL2 / BAX ratio, and blocking cleavage of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase
