The gene encoding osteoactivin has been identified as a rat cDNA (1716 bp) that is expressed in osteoblasts actively engaged in bone matrix production and mineralization (Safadi et al, 2001). The protein is known also as human HGFIN [hematopoietic growth factor inducible neurokinin-1 type], GPNMB [Glycoprotein non-metastatic melanoma protein B] (nmb), a cDNA more highly expressed in melanoma-derived cell lines of low metastatic potential, and mouse DC-HIL [dendritic cell-associated heparan sulfate proteoglycan-integrin ligand] (Shikano et al, 2001).
