[Glycoprotein non-metastatic melanoma protein B] called also nmb. The cDNA encoding this glycoprotein has been identified by Weterman et al (1995) in a search for genes expressed preferentially in metastatic melanoma cell lines. GPNMB is expressed preferentially in melanoma cell lines with low metastatic potential. A mutation in the murine gene has been shown to be responsible for iris pigment dispersion, which is one of the features of pigmentary glaucoma in DBA/2J mice (Anderson et al, 2002).
The gene has been identified independently as osteoactivin, HGFIN [hematopoietic growth factor inducible neurokinin-1 type], and mouse DC-HIL [
