[matador] Mtd is a member of the BCL2 protein family and contains conserved BCL2 homology domains (BH1, BH2, BH3, BH4). Mtd acts as regulator of cell death by apoptosis. Expression of Mtd promotes the death of primary sensory neurons, 293T-cells and HeLa cells. Apoptosis induced by Mtd is not inhibited by the survival-promoting proteins BCL2 or BCLxL and cannot be blocked by the broad range synthetic inhibitors of caspases, zVAD-fmk or a viral protein crmA (Inohara et al, 1998).
