A growing protein family positively or negatively influencing cell death by apoptosis has been identified. BCL2 is the prototypical member of an evolutionary conserved large protein family regulating cell death by apoptosis. These proteins display different patterns of expression as well as function (Chao and Korsmeyer, 1998).
