[Cytokine response modifier A] crmA, known also as Cowpox Virus 38K gene (Shchelkunov et al, 1998), has been found to encode a serpin-like protease inhibitor. crmA encoded by Cowpox virus was the first poxvirus serpin described (Pickup et al, 1986). This viral protein functions as a specific and extremely potent inhibitor of IL1-beta Convertase (Ray et al, 1992; Komiyama et al, 1994; Garcia-Calvo et al, 1998). crmA also blocks the activities of the cysteine protease CPP32 and other Caspases and has been shown to target granzyme B (Quan et al, 1995).
The crmA protein displays 92 % amino acid identity with B13R (vaccinia virus, strain Western Reserve), or SPI-2 gene (
