The ML-1 gene has been identified in human T-cells. The second exon of the ML-1 gene shares significant sequence identity with the gene encoding IL17 but the protein is functionally different from IL17. Kawaguchi et al (2002) have renamed the factor IL26. However, the ML-1 sequence is not the same as that of AK155, another protein which is called also IL26. The gene has been identified independently as IL17F.
ML-1 gene expression is upregulated in activated peripheral blood mononuclear cells, CD4(+) T-cells, allergen-specific Th0, Th1, and Th2 clones, activated
