[low density lipoprotein-related protein 2] The protein is a member of a family of receptors with structural similarities to the low density lipoprotein receptor. LRP2 has been identified originally as gp330, and rat Heymann nephritis antigen. It has been renamed Megalin. The mouse counterpart is considered to be brushin.
The protein has been shown to mediate endocytosis of multiple, unrelated ligands via coated pits, leading to delivery of ligands to lysosomes (Saito et al, 2010). LRP2 has been shown to act as a receptor for lipocalin-2 (Hvidberg et al, 2005), transthyretin (Fleming et al, 2009), and metallothionein-1 and metallothionein-2 (Chung et al, 2008; Fitzgerald et al, 2007).
