gp330 (Kerjaschki D and Farquhar MG, 1982, 1983) is a membrane glycoprotein originally identified as the major antigen involved in Heymann nephritis (Heymann W et al, 1959), a rat model of membranous nephropathy in humans, caused by the binding of circulating antibodies to kidney glomeruli. The protein is a member of a family of receptors with structural similarities to the low density lipoprotein receptor and has been given the designation LRP2 [low density lipoprotein-related protein 2]. The protein is known also as rat Heymann nephritis antigen and is being referred to frequently as megalin. The mouse counterpart is considered to be brushin.
