Transthyretin
abbr. and approved gene symbol: TTR. This protein of 55 kDa (127 amino acids) is composed of four identical subunits. It is known also as Thyroxine-binding prealbumin (abbr. TBPA) or prealbumin (PALB) (Kanda et al, 1974; Whitehead et al, 1984; Mita et al, 1984). The gene maps to human chromosome 18 q12.1 and consists of four exons. Transthyretin is an evolutionary conserved protein (Power et al, 2000).
Transthyretin plays an important role in the plasma transport of thyroxine (Ingbar, 1958) and retinol (Raz and Goodman, 1969), interacting with T4 and plasma retinol binding protein (see: RBP4). It is a multifunctional protein
