The cDNA encoding this protein has been cloned by Meyaard et al (1997). LAIR2 protein is expressed as a soluble receptor following stimulation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells. High amounts of LAIR2 are found in urine of pregnant women. LAIR2 levels are increased in the synovial fluid of patients with rheumatoid arthritis as compared with osteoarthritis patients. It binds to various collagen types. LAIR2 has been shown to prevent cross-linking of LAIR1 and binding of LAIR1 to collagens (Lebbink et al, 2008).
