Hybridoma growth factor
abbr. HGF (a term with multiple meanings). This factor was detected initially as a T-cell derived protein promoting the growth of hybridomas. It was found to be identical with previously described factors 26 kDa protein, IFN-beta-2, and BSF-2. The new name suggested for HGF is IL6.
L-HGF, obtained from conditioned medium of virus-infected L929 fibroblasts is identical with HGF and hence identical with IL6.
HGF activity is used also as an assay for IL6. In addition, HGF/IL6 can be used to increase the proportion of B-cell
