approved gene symbol: GCG. Glucagon is a pancreatic hormone of 29 amino acids (HSQGTFTSDYSKYLDSRRAQDFVQWLMNT) (Bromer et al, 1956), also referred to as glucagon-29 (see also: pancreatic-type glucagon). The name glucagon refers to its glucose elevating effect (gluc-ose agon-ist).
The hormone has been identified originally as a hyperglycemic factor in pancreas extracts (Kimball and Murlin, 1923) and purified from a side fraction of purified insulin (Kenny, 1955). It has been called hyperglycemic-glycogenolytic factor (Sutherland et al, 1948; De Duve and Vuylsteke, 1953; Staub et al, 1953). It is produced by A-cells (glucagon cells) of pancreatic islet of Langerhans cells
