[hormone, hormone-like]
Hormones are defined classically as a class of signalling molecules produced by specialised cell types withinglands. The anatomical terms exocrine glands and endocrine glands refer to the organisation of these glands and the way by which hormones are secreted: exocrine glands secrete hormones into a ductal system to an epithelial surface, whereas endocrine glands secrete hormones directly into the circulation; accordingly, the hormones secreted by such glands are being referred to also by the collective terms Exocrine hormones and Endocrine hormones and the producer cells are called collectively exocrine cells and endocrine cells, respectively.
