Langerhans cells are named after the German pathologist Paul Langerhans (1847-1888) (called originally Flügelzellen von Langerhans [German for 'winged cells of Langerhans'] The cells were named in honor of the work of Langerhans by Edouard Laguesse in 1893 (Fossati et al, 2004). These cells have a characteristic dendritic or stellate form, which is revealed by gold impregnation stains. They are considered the dendritic cells from epidermis.
