Fortilin is a protein of 172 amino acids highly conserved from mammals to plants. Sequence analysis shows that this protein is identical with TCTP [translationally controlled tumor protein].
Fortilin is structurally unrelated to either BCL2 family member proteins or inhibitor of apoptosis proteins (Li et al, 2001). Fortilin mRNA is expressed ubiquitously and expressed highly in the liver, kidney, and small intestine. Expression in cancerous cell lines (H1299, MCF-7, and A549) appears to be higher than in cell lines derived from normal tissue (HEK293).
