MCF-7
A human breast cancer cell line that has retained several characteristics of differentiated mammary epithelium, including the ability to process estradiol via cytoplasmic estrogen receptors.
The cell line is used, among other things, to measure IGF activities (see also: bioassays, cytokine assays). These cells are absolutely dependent on exogenous growth factors (see also: Factor-dependent cell lines) and become quiescent if cultured in growth factor-inactivated serum in the absence of estrogen or phenol red. Resting cells can be restimulated to proliferate by insulin or the two forms of IGF, particularly in synergism with estradiol.
