(also 293 cells) A permanent line derived from primary human embryonal kidney transformed by sheared human adenovirus type 5 (Ad 5) DNA. The cells are hypotriploid and form tumors in nude mice (Graham et al, 1977). HEK293 cells express an unusual heterodimeric cell surface receptor for vitronectin, composed of the integrin-beta-1 subunit and the vitronectin receptor integrin-alpha-V subunit. This receptor appears to mediate cell adhesion exclusively to vitronectin, in contrast to previously described receptors, which have multiple ligands (Bodary and McLean, 1990).
