The cDNA for Ecalectin has been isolated from a human T-cell derived expression library by Matsumoto et al (1998). The cDNA encodes a protein of 36 kDa consisting of 323 amino acids that contains two conserved carbohydrate recognition domains. Ecalectin lacks a hydrophobic signal sequence but is secreted from mammalian cells. Ecalectin is a member of the large family of animal lectins that have affinity for beta-galactosides.
