this general term (from Latin legere: to read) pertains to any protein or peptide capable of binding reversibly and with a high degree of stereospecificity structurally widely diversified but specific sugar / carbohydrate sequences and glycoconjugates on the surface of all cell types found in an organism (for overview see: Nagae and Yamaguchi, 2015; Gabius et al, 2016; Manning et al, 2017; Kaltner et al, 2018; Hendrickson and Zherdev, 2018). Lectins from plants are often called phytohaemagglutinins. Excluded from the definition are antibodies, enzymes using carbohydrates as ligands
