Proteins, including most cytokines, that are secreted by cells into the ambient medium are called secretory proteins. Their passage through intracellular membranes and also their export through the outer cellular membrane is mediated by signal sequences or leader sequences (called also signal peptide) of approximately 15-20 amino acids that are part of the respective preprotein. This leader sequence is cleaved off to yield the mature protein.
