[ECL cell]
[enterochromaffin-like cells] These cells (Pearse et al, 1970) - not to be confused with enterochromaffin cells - constitute more than 30 % of the neuroendocrine cells in the acid-secreting gastric epithelium (Prinz et al, 2003; Chen et al, 1998; Chen et al, 1999; Sundler et al, 1998; Hakanson et al, 1998; Zhao and Chen, 2012). They make up approximately 60-70 % of all endocrine cells in the rat oxyntic gland (Simonsson et al, 1988).
These cells lie in close contact to chief cells and parietal cells (Kamoshida et al, 1999). The designation of these cells as chromaffin cells derives from the particular staining behaviour of these
