[neuroendocrine cell]
a general term pertaining to specialized neurons that produce, store, and secrete hormones, especially neurohormones, into the blood stream in response to signals received from other neurons. These cells are called also neurosecretory cells. They connect the endocrine system with the nervous system (see also: neuroimmune network). For specialised neuroendocrine cells see also: magnocellular neurosecretory cells.
The hypothalamus and the pituitary are particularly rich in neuroendocrine cells, but they exist also in other organs. Different types of neuroendocrine cells can be distinguished by the profile of hormones, cytokines, and growth factors
