These cells, gastric parietal cells, which are also being referred to as oxyntic cells, acid cells, border cells, Heidenhain's cells, are found in the gastric epithelium in contact with chief cells and ECL cells (Kamoshida et al, 1999). They are specialized epithelial cells located in the central (corpus) region of the stomach. They are positioned in tubular mucosal invaginations known as gastric units.
