approved gene symbol CSTA. This protein is a member of the cystatin superfamily of the papain family of cysteine proteases (Rawlings and Barrett, 1990; Brown and Dziegielewska, 1997). For genome structure and gene regulation see: Yamazaki et al (1997), Takahashi et al (1998).
The protein has been identified independently as Keratolinin, Stefin A, and ACPI [acid cysteine proteinase inhibitor].
Cystatin A has been shown to form tight complexes with papain, cathepsin B, cathepsin H, and cathepsin L (Strauss et al, 1988). Lenarcic B et al (1996) have reported that Cystatin A is a fast-acting inhibitor of papain, cathepsin L, and cathepsin S. It also binds tightly to cathepsin H.
