CTSL1 [cathepsin L1]; abbr. also CAL, CATL. The approved gene symbol is CTSL. Cathepsin L is a lysosomal cysteine proteinase consisting of a heavy chain of about 25 kDa and a light chain of about 5 kDa derived proteolytically from the same precursor (Mason et al, 1986; Joseph et al, 1988). Several variants of Cathepsin L have been described. Some of these differ only in the 5-prime noncoding region (Chauhan et al, 1993); Abudula et al, 2001; Arora and Chauhan, 2002). Guay et al (2000) have reported that the propeptide of cathepsin L is a potent inhibitor of cathepsin L, and also of the cysteine proteases cathepsin S and cathepsin K.
