Stefin A

abbr. STFA; abbr. also STF1. Stefin A has been purified from the cytosol of human polymorphonuclear granulocytes. Stefin A is a protein inhibitor of cysteine proteinases and inhibits papain, cathepsin B and cathepsin H, but it does not inhibit serine and aspartic proteinases (Brzin et al, 1983). Machleidt et al (1983) and Turk et al (1986) have reported the primary structure of stefin A (98 amino acids).

Sequence comparisons show that this protein is identical with cystatin A.
