Cathepsin S
approved gene symbol: CTSS; abbr. also CatS. In the nomenclature of enzymes cathepsin S has received the designation EC3.4.22.27. Wiederanders et al (1992) have cloned the cDNA encoding human Cathepsin S. Chromosomal localization, gene structure, and tissue distribution of human cathepsin S have been reported by Shi et al (1994).
Cathepsin S is a monomeric lysosomal cysteine protease of the papain superfamily, all of which share similar sequence and three dimensional structures and are small monomeric proteins. Cathepsin S is an endopeptidase that is involved in the degradation of extracellular matrix proteins, angiogenesis
