[chicken matrix metalloproteinase] The cDNA for CMMP was cloned from cultured primary chicken embryo fibroblasts. It encodes a protein of 472 amino acids including a putative 19-residue signal sequence. The protein contains a unique cysteine residue in the catalytic domain. A homologously inserted cysteine is found also in Xenopus laevis XMMP and human MMP-19. CMMP cleaves casein and gelatin.
The chicken CMMP sequence appears significantly diverged from other matrix metalloproteinase but is most related to the human collagenases (MMP-1, MMP-8
