An African clawed toad used widely as a model organism for studying various aspects of cell differentiation and cell functions and embryonic development. The size of fertilized eggs, which are spheres of 1-2 mm in diameter with a dark brown pigmented upper hemisphere (animal hemisphere) and a light colored lower hemisphere (vegetal hemisphere) facilitate studies because embryogenesis occurs entirely outside the body of the female. In addition, the development from egg laying to larval hatching only takes approximately 48 hours. Xenopus laevis oocytes are now an invaluable aid in the analysis of mechanisms controlling embryonic development, cell differentiation, and cell proliferation because the cells are amenable to microdissection and interference to follow the fates of cells
