[cartilage intermediate layer protein-2] The gene encoding CILP2 has been cloned by Johnson et al (2003). The protein shares 50.6 % identity with CILP-1. CILP2 is detected in cultured normal hyaline cartilage articular chondrocytes, but not in osteoblasts, fibroblasts, or vascular smooth muscle cells. Bernardo et al (2011) have reported that CILP2 is expressed in articular and meniscal cartilage and down-regulated in experimental osteoarthritis. CILP2 is present in skeletal muscle and may play a role in extracellular matrix structure and function of non-cartilaginous tissues (Bernardo et al, 2011). For a bioactive fragment of CILP2 see: Cartilostatin-2.
