Cartilostatin-2 [CILP2(153-171)] is a bioactive fragment (see also: cryptides) derived from the CILP2 [cartilage intermediate layer protein-2] gene, which is expressed in chondrocytes and is related to CILP [cartilage intermediate layer protein] (Johnson et al, 2003). Cartilostatin-2 [GPWGPCSGSCGPGRRLRRR] corresponds to residues 153-171 of CILP2. It has been shown to inhibit the proliferation and migration of human umbilical vein endothelial cells in vitro and is therefore thought to possess anti-angiogenic properties in vivo (Karagiannis and Popel, 2008).
