[Epstein-Barr virus BALF-1 protein] BALF-1 is an open reading frame in the genome of EBV. It encodes a protein with significant sequence similarity to other viral BCL2 homologous proteins and cellular BCL2. Transfection of cells with a BALF-1 cDNA confers resistance against apoptosis. The protein associates with the pro-apoptotic members of the BCL2 family, BAX and BAK.
Bellows et al (2002) have reported that BALF-1 lacks pro-apoptotic activity and inhibits the anti-apoptotic activity of EBV BHRF-1 and of KSHV orf16 encoded by KSHV [
