[Epstein-Barr virus BHRF1] This is a highly conserved open reading frame encoded by the human herpesvirus Epstein-Barr virus and other primate virus analogues of Epstein-Barr virus (Williams et al, 2001). The 17 kDa protein is expressed in the early lytic cycle but is not essential in vitro either for virus induced B-cell transformation of lymphoblastoid cell lines or full virus replication.
Viral BHRF-1 is considered a homolog of mammalian BCL2 (see also: viral BCL2) (Henderson et al, 1993). The viral gene product resembles BCL2 both in its subcellular localization and in its capacity to enhance survival of B-cells. BHRF-1 may serve to delay cell death by
