The human B1 antigen, recognized by a monoclonal antibody of the same name, is a highly hydrophobic phosphoprotein (Oettgen et al, 1983). The gene has been cloned by Tedder et al (1988). In the nomenclature of CD antigens this protein has been given the designation CD20.
B1 has been identified as a cell surface antigen that is expressed widely on B-cells from early pre-B-cells to differentiated plasma cells (Stashenko et al, 1980, 1981). Monocytes, resting and activated T-cells, null cells, and tumors of T-cell and myeloid origin do not express B1 (Stashenko et al, 1980).
