[plasma cell, plasma cell-derived]
Plasma cells or effector B-cells (abbr. sometimes Beff cells) are secretory cells that synthesize immunoglobulins (see also: antibody-producing cells). These cells constitute the final stage of B-cell differentiation and are long-lived nondividing cells. They do not constitute a uniform population of cells. Subpopulations show functional differences and express, for example, local patterns of adhesion molecule expression and may differ in the types of receptors they express (Tarte et al, 2003). Sometimes, the term plasmacytes or plasmocytes is used.
