spermatocytes are diploid male germ cells in the germinal epithelium of the seminiferous tubule. These cells are derived from immature male germinal cells known as spermatogonia that differentiate during development from precursors of the germ cell lineage (gonocytes) (Orth and McGuinness, 1994). Gaskell et al (2004) have pointed out that frequently all types of germ cells are being referred to as gonocytes or prespermatogonia, giving the impression that they are identical. They distinguish between three types of germ cell
