also: germline cells. A collective term for those cells of an organism directly involved in reproductive functions. Germ cells, called also gametocytes, comprise female egg cells (oocytes) and male spermatocytes, as well as their respective immature stages. These cells are being referred to also as sex cells or reproductive cells (see also: gametes). Germ cells have the potential to generate an entire organism and, therefore, they have been referred to as the ultimate totipotent stem cells (Cinalli et al, 2008).
