Gonocytes are derived from primordial germ cells, first specified in the extraembryonic mesoderm, which then migrate to gonads and proliferate to form gonocytes. Gonocytes are unipotent cells and become only germ cells such as spermatogonia or oogonia (Buehr, 1997). See also: spermatocytes.
