[root cell]
(cochlear root cells) This specialised epithelial cell type in the cochlea is found at the lateral extremity of the outer hair cell compartment, in part within the cochlear outer sulcus region in the basal cochlear turns, and also within the connective tissue forming the spiral ligament. The endolymphatic surface of the external spiral sulcus is nearly completely covered by Claudius' cells under which the root cells are situated. Root cells derive their name from characteristic finger-like basolateral projections that extend between the mesenchymal fibrocytes of the ligament. They protrude into the connective tissue of the spiral ligament in a tree-like fashion, forming primary, secondary, and tertiary branches (Galić and Giebel, 1989).
